The Joker: I believe whatever doesn’t kill you simply makes you… stranger.

[stumbles out of wrecked truck
The Joker: [to Batman] Come on, I want you to do it, I want you to do it. Come on, hit me. *Hit me!*

The Joker: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We are tonight’s entertainment! I only have one question. Where is Harvey Dent?
[nobody responds; The Joker walks around the room pointing with his shotgun at everyone
The Joker: You know where Harvey is? You know who he is?
[grabs a man’s face
The Joker: You know where I can find Harvey? I need to talk to him about something. Just something, a little.
[turns the man’s face away
The Joker: No…

The Joker: And I thought my jokes were bad…

The Joker: You know, I’ll settle for his loved ones.
Gentleman at Party: We’re not intimidated by thugs!
The Joker: [as he smacks his lips] You know, you remind me of my father.
[pulls out his switchblade and brings it to the Gentleman’s mouth
The Joker: I hated my father!
Rachel Dawes: [off screen] Okay, stop!
[turns to face Rachel, tosses the Gentleman to his thugs and approaches Rachel, adjusting his hair with the knife
The Joker: Well, hello, beautiful. You must be Harvey’s squeeze, hmm? And you *are* beautiful.
[hovers around the incredibly nervous Rachel
The Joker: You look nervous. Is it the scars? You want to know how I got ’em?
[grabs Rachel’s head and positions the knife by her mouth
The Joker: Come here. Hey! Look at me. So I had a wife, beautiful, like you, who tells me I worry too much. Who tells me I ought to smile more. Who gambles and gets in deep with the sharks… look at me! One day, they carve her face. And we have no money for surgeries. She can’t take it. I just want to see her smile again, hmm? I just want her to know that I don’t care about the scars. So… I stick a razor in my mouth and do this…
[mimics slicing his mouth open with his tongue
The Joker: …to myself. And you know what? She can’t stand the sight of me! She leaves. Now I see the funny side. Now I’m always smiling!
[Rachel knees the Joker in the groin; he meerly laughs it off
The Joker: A little fight in you. I like that.
Batman: Then you’re going to love me.

The Joker: It’s a funny world we live in. Speaking of funny, do you know how I got these scars?
Batman: No! But I know how you got these!

[bumps along while driving hijacked truck
The Joker: I like this job – I love it!

The Joker: And…here… we…go!

The Joker: You just couldn’t let me go could you? This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You truly are incorruptible aren’t you? You won’t kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness, and I won’t kill you, because you’re just too much fun. I think you and I are destined to do this forever.
Batman: You’ll be in a padded cell forever.
The Joker: Maybe we can share one. They’ll be doubling up, the rate this city’s inhabitants are losing their minds.

The Joker: [to Det. Stephens] Do you wanna know why I use a knife? Guns are too quick. You can’t savor all the… little… emotions. In… you see, in their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way, I know your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?

Batman: What did you do?
The Joker: I took Gotham’s white knight, and brought him down to our level. It wasn’t hard. Y’see, madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little…push.
[laughs

The Joker: [to Batman] We really should stop fighting, we’ll miss the fireworks!

The Joker: The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules!

The Joker: See, I’m not a monster…I’m just ahead of the curve.

The Joker: See, I’m a man of simple tastes. I like dynamite…and gunpowder…and gasoline! Do you know what all of these things have in common? They’re cheap!

[repeated line
The Joker: Wanna know how I got these scars?

The Joker: [holding a knife inside Gambol’s mouth] Wanna know how I got these scars? My father was….a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn’t like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. Turns to me and he says “Why so serious?” Comes at me with the knife,”Why so serious?” He sticks the blade in my mouth. “Let’s put a smile on that face!” And….. Why so serious?

The Joker: You’ll see, I’ll show you, that when the chips are down, these uh… civilized people, they’ll eat each other.

The Joker: I want…I want my phone call. I want my phone call.
Detective Stephens: That’s nice.
The Joker: How many of your friends have I killed?
Detective Stephens: I’m a twenty year man. I can tell the difference between punks who need a little lesson in manners… and the freaks like you who would just enjoy it.
[pause
Detective Stephens: And you’ve killed six of my friends.
The Joker: [faking interest, mouths “six”

The Joker: People will die. Starting tonight. I’m a man of my word.

The Joker: Harvey, Harvey, Harvey Dent. Ohh, excuse me, I want to drive!
[gets behind the wheel of a semi truck

The Chechen: What do you propose?
The Joker: It’s simple, we, uh, kill the Batman.
[Mobsters laugh
Salvatore Maroni: If you’re so smart, why didn’t you kill him already?
The Joker: If you’re good at something, never do it for free.

The Joker: [over the PA] Tonight you are all going to be part of a *social experiment*.

[the Batpod charges
The Joker: Ooohhh. You want to play. Come on!

The Joker: You just couldn’t let me go, could you?

The Joker: You have nothing, nothing to threaten me with. Nothing to do with all your strength.

The Joker: [to Batman] You didn’t think I’d risk the battle for Gotham’s soul in a fistfight with you?

The Joker: [to the mob] I know what you’re afraid of. I know why you choose to have your little “group therapy sessions” in broad daylight.
[pause
The Joker: The Batman.

Gambol: [to The Joker] Give me one reason why I shouldn’t have my boy here rip your head off.
The Joker: How about a magic trick?
[pulls out a pencil and sticks it upright into the table
The Joker: I’m gonna make this pencil… disappear.
[Gambol’s thug walks over to kill The Joker, who pushes his face into the pencil and kills him
The Joker: Ta-daa! It’s… gone!

Gambol: You’re crazy.
The Joker: No, I’m not. No…I’m *not.*

Batman: Why do you want to kill me?
The Joker: [laughs] Kill you? I don’t want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, you… you complete me.

[Gambol makes a threat; Joker opens his coat to reveal setup of grenades on a string, which he starts to tug.
The Joker: Now, let’s not *blow* things out of proportion here…You know what? You let me know when you start taking things a bit more seriously.
[takes out Joker card and sets it on the table
The Joker: Here’s my *card*.

Gambol: You think you can just come in here and take our money?
The Joker: Yeah.

The Joker: Let’s turn the clocks back. A year ago, these cops and lawyers wouldn’t dare cross any of you. I mean, what happened? Did your – did your balls drop off? Hmm?

The Joker: [to Gambol’s thugs] Now, our operation is small but there is a lot of potential for ‘aggressive’ expansion. So which one of you fine gentlemen would like to join our team? Oh, there’s only one spot open right now so we’re gonna have…
[breaks pool cue over knee
The Joker: tryouts.
[throws broken pool cue at the thugs
The Joker: Make it fast.

The Joker: [Batman slams The Joker’s head on a table] Never start with the head, the victim gets all fuzzy.

The Joker: Those mob fools want you gone so they can get back to the way things were. But I know the truth: there’s no going back. You’ve changed things … forever.

Batman: Where is Dent?
The Joker: You have all these rules and you think they’ll save you.
Lt. James Gordon: [Batman slams the Joker against a wall] He’s in control.
Batman: I have one rule.
The Joker: Then that’s the rule you’ll have to break to know the truth.
Batman: Which is?
The Joker: The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules. And tonight you’re gonna break your one rule.
Batman: I’m considering it.
The Joker: No, there’s only minutes left, so you’re gonna have to play my little game if you want to save one of them.

The Joker: I had a vision, of a world without Batman. The mob ground out a little profit and the police tried to shut them down, one block at a time. And it was so… boring. I’ve had a change of heart. I don’t want Mr.Reese spoiling everything, but why should I have all the fun? Let’s give someone else a chance. If Coleman Reese isn’t dead in sixty minutes then I blow up a hospital.

The Joker: Are you the real Batman?
Brian: No.
The Joker: No? Then why do you dress like him?
Brian: He’s a symbol… that we don’t have to be afraid of scum like you.
The Joker: Yeah, you do, Brian. You *really* do!

The Joker: We made it!

The Joker: This town deserves a better class of criminal… and I’m gonna give it to them. Tell your men they work for me now. This is *my* city.
The Chechen: They won’t work for a freak…
The Joker: [mocking his accent] A freak…
[pulls out his switchblade and tosses it to some goons who grabs the Chechen
The Joker: Why don’t we cut you up into little pieces and feed you to your pooches? Hmm? And then we’ll see how loyal a hungry dog really is. It’s not about money… it’s about… sending a message. Everything burns.

Lt. James Gordon: Harvey Dent never made it home.
The Joker: Of course not.
Lt. James Gordon: What have you done with him?
The Joker: Me? I was right here.
[holds up his arms in handcuffs
The Joker: Who did you leave him with? Your people? That’s assuming of course that they are still your people, and not Maroni’s. Does it depress you, commissioner? To know just how alone you really are? Does it make you feel responsible for Harvey Dent’s current predicament?
Lt. James Gordon: Where is he?
The Joker: What’s the time?
Lt. James Gordon: What difference does that make?
The Joker: Well, depending on the time, he may in one spot or several.
Lt. James Gordon: If we’re gonna play games…
[takes off Joker’s handcuffs
Lt. James Gordon: I’m gonna need a cup of coffee.
The Joker: Ah, the good cop, bad cop routine?
Lt. James Gordon: Not exactly.

Grumpy: I’m bettin’ The Joker told you to kill me soon as we loaded the cash.
The Joker: No, no. I kill the bus driver.
Grumpy: Bus driver? What bus driver?
[a school bus drives through the wall and kills Grumpy

The Joker: [to the mob] Oh, and by the way, the suit, it wasn’t cheap. You oughta know, you bought it.

The Joker: It’s simple. Kill the Batman!

The Joker: [speaking to Two-Face] Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just, do things. The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Gordon’s got plans. You know, they’re schemers. Schemers trying to control their worlds. I’m not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how, pathetic, their attempts to control things really are. So, when I say, ah, come here, when I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know that I’m telling the truth.
The Joker: It’s the schemers that put you where you are. You were a schemer, you had plans, and uh, look where that got you. I just did what I do best. I took your plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did, to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Hm? You know what, you know what I noticed? Nobody panics when things go according to plan. Even if the plan is horrifying. If tomorrow I tell the press that like a gang banger, will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it’s all, part of the plan. But when I say that one, little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!
The Joker: [Joker hands Two-Face a gun and points it at himself] Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos. Oh and you know the thing about chaos, it’s fair.
[with the gun in Two-Face’s hand, Two-Face pauses and takes out his coin
Two-Face: [showing the unscarred side] You live.
The Joker: Mm-hm.
Two-Face: [flipping, showing the scarred side] You die.
The Joker: Mmm, Now we’re talking.
[with the gun in Two-Face’s hand, the joker has the gun to his own forehead; Two-Face pauses and takes out his coin
Two-Face: [showing the unscarred side] You live.
The Joker: Mm-hm.
Two-Face: [showing the scarred side] You die.
The Joker: Hm… Now we’re talkin!

The Joker: [quickly glancing up, defensively] I’m not. No, I’m not. If we don’t deal with this now, soon, little uh “Gambol?“ here won’t be able to get a-a nickel for his grandma.
Gambol: [slams the table, and angrily rises from his seat] Enough from the clown!
The Joker: Ah-tadadadah. [rises from his seat as well, revealing grenades and explosives under his suit jacket with a string attached to his thumb] Let’s not *blow* this out of proportion.

Gambol: You think you can steal from us and just walk away?!
      The Joker: [matter-of-factly] Yeah.

The Joker: …I – So listen, why don’t you give me a call when you want to start taking things a little more seriously? Here is…my…card. [pulls out a Joker playing card and shows it to everyone] Mm-hm.

      [the Batpod charges]
The Joker: Ooohhh. You want to play. Come on! Come in.
      He missed!

      [stumbles out of wrecked truck]
The Joker: [to Batman] Come on. Come on, I want you to do it, I want you to do it. Come on, hit me. Hit me. Come on. *Hit me!*

      -interrogation
Lt. James Gordon: Harvey Dent never made it home.
      The Joker: Of course not.
Lt. James Gordon: What have you done with him?
The Joker: Me? I was right here.

      Lt. James Gordon: Not exactly.

The Joker: [Batman slams The Joker’s head on a table] Never start with the head, the victim gets all fuzzy. He can’t feel the next…
[Batman’s fist smacks down on the Joker’s fingers.]
      The Joker (calm): See?

Batman: You wanted me. Here I am.
The Joker: I wanted to see what you’d do…and you didn’t disappoint. You let 5 people die. Then you let Dent take your place. Even to a guy like me, that’s cold.
      Batman: Where’s Dent?
The Joker: Those mob fools want you gone so they can get back to the way things were. But I know the truth: there’s no going back. You’ve changed things … forever.
Batman: Then why you wanna kill me?
The Joker: [laughs] I don’t wanna kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, no. No, you… you complete me.
Batman: You’re garbage who kills for money.
The Joker: Don’t talk like one of them, you’re not. Even if you’d like to be. To them, you’re a freak. Like me. They need you right now. But…when they don’t…they cast you out. Like a leper.
See, their morals, their code; it’s a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They’re only as good as the world allows them to be. I’ll show you. When the chips are down these, uh, these civilized people? They’ll eat each other.
See I’m not a monster, I’m just ahead of the curve.

      Batman: Where is Dent?
The Joker: You have all these rules and you think they’ll save you.
Lt. James Gordon: [Batman slams the Joker against a wall] He’s in control.

The Joker: No, there’s only minutes left, so you’re gonna have to play my little game if you want to save one of them.
      Batman: Them?
The Joker: You know, for a while… I thought you really were Dent. The way you threw yourself after her…

The Joker:  Look at you go! Does Harvey know about you and his little bunny?
[The Joker smashes into the wall- slides to the floor. Batman stands over him]
      Batman: WHERE ARE THEY?
The Joker: Killing is making a choice!
Batman: [punches the Joker across the face.] WHERE ARE THEY?
The Joker: You choose one life over the other. Your friend, the district attorney, or his blushing bride-to-be.
[Batman punches the Joker again. The Joker laughs.]

The Joker: You have nothing! Nothing to threaten me with! Nothing to do with all your strength.

The Joker: But don’t worry. I’m going to tell you where they are. Both of them. And that’s the point. You’ll have to choose.
      He’s at 250 52nd Street. And she’s at Avenue X at Cicero.

      -after the vinterrogation
The Joker: I want…I want my phone call. I want it. I want my phone call.
      Detective Stephens: That’s nice.

The Joker: How many of your friends have I killed?
Detective Stephens: I’m a twenty year man. And I know the difference between punks who need a little lesson in manners… and the freaks like you who would just enjoy it.
      [pause]
Detective Stephens: And you’ve killed six of my friends.
The Joker: [faking interest, mouths “six”]

The Joker: [to Det. Stephens] Do you wanna know… why I use a knife? Guns are too quick. You can’t savor all the… little… emotions. In… you see, in their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way, I know your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?

Det.: Drop The weapon! Let him go!
      The Joker: What sorry?
      Det.: What so you want?
The Joker: I just want my phone call.

The Joker: [to Stephens] Shh sh shh

The Joker: [to Lau] Hello there.

      -The Chechen
The Chechen: You’re so crazy as you look.
The Joker: I told you, I’m a man of my word.
      Where is the Italien?

The Joker: See, I’m a guy of simple tastes. I enjoy eh… dynamite…and gunpowder…and gasoline!
And you know the thing that they have in common? They’re cheap!

      The Chechen:???
The Joker: Oh, I am. I’m only burning my half. All you care about is money.
This town deserves a better class of criminal… and I’m gonna give it to them. Tell your men they work for me now. This is *my* city.
The Chechen: They won’t work for a freak…
The Joker: [mocking his accent] A freeaaak…
[pulls out his switchblade and tosses it to some goons who grabs the Chechen]
The Joker: Why don’t we cut you up into little pieces and feed you to your pooches? Hmm? And then we’ll see how loyal a hungry dog really is.
      It’s not about money… it’s about… sending a message. Everything burns.

The Joker: I had a vision, of a world without Batman. The mob ground out a little profit and the police tried to shut them down, one block at a time. And it was so… boring. I’ve had a change of heart. I don’t want Mr. Reese spoiling everything, but why should I have all the fun? Let’s give someone else a chance. If Coleman Reese isn’t dead in sixty minutes then I blow up a hospital.

      -In the hospital
The Joker: [puts off his mask] Hi…
You know, I don’t want there to be any hard feelings between us, Harvey.
      When you and, uh…Ra
      Dent: RACHEL!
The Joker: …Rachel were being abducted, I was sitting in Gordon’s cage. I didn’t rig those charges.
      Dent: Your men. Your plan.
The Joker: Do I really look like a guy with a plan?

The Joker: You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just, do things. The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Gordon’s got plans. You know, they’re schemers. Schemers trying to control their little worlds.

[with the gun in Two-Face’s hand, Two-Face pauses and takes out his coin]
Two-Face: [showing the unscarred side] You live.
      The Joker: Mm-hm.
Two-Face: [flipping, showing the scarred side] You die.
The Joker: Mmm, Now we’re talking.

      -Social experiment
The Joker: [over the PA] Tonight you’re all gonna be part of a social experiment. Through the magic of diesel fuel and ammonium nitrate, I’m ready right now to blow you all sky high. Anyone attempts to get off their boat, you all die. Each of you has a remote… to blow up the other boat. At midnight, I blow you all up. If, however, one of you presses the button, I’ll let that boat live. So, who’s it going to be: Harvey Dent’s most wanted scumbag collection, or the sweet and innocent civilians? You choose… oh, and you might want to decide quickly, because the people on the other boat may not be quite so noble

      -Last scene
The Joker: [to Batman] We really should stop this fight, otherwise we’ll miss the fireworks!
Batman: There wont be any fireworks.
      The Joker: And…here… we…go!

Batman: What were trying to prove? That deep down, everyone’s as ugly as you? You’re alone!
The Joker: You can’t rely on anyone these days. You gotta do eveything yourself. Don’t we?
      That’s ok, I came prepared.

The Joker: It’s a funny world we live in. Speaking of which, do you know how I got these scars?
Batman: No! But I know how you got these!
      The Joker: [Laughing while falling]

The Joker: You… You just couldn’t let me go, could you? This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You truly are incorruptible aren’t you, huh? You won’t kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness, and I won’t kill you, because you’re just too much fun. I think you and I are destined to do this forever.
Batman: You’ll be in a padded cell forever.
The Joker: Maybe we can share one. They’ll be doubling up, the rate this city’s inhabitants are losing their minds.
Batman: This city just showed you that it’s full of people ready to believe in good.
The Joker: Until their spirit breaks completely. Until they get a good look at the real Harvey Dent, huh? And all the heroic things he’s done. You didn’t think I’d risk losing the battle for Gotham’s soul in a fist-fight with you? No, you need an ace in the hole; mine’s Harvey.

      Batman: What did you do?
The Joker: I took Gotham’s White Knight and brought him down to our level. It wasn’t hard. See, madness, as you know, is like gravity: all it takes is a little push. (Laughter)
      [laughs]

  5. the JokER Says:

(I am the Very definition of twisted).Wanna know how I got these scars? My father was….a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn’t like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. Turns to me and he says “Why so serious?” Comes at me with the knife,”Why so serious?” He sticks the blade in my mouth. “Let’s put a smile on that face!” And….. Why so serious?

    • Anonymous Says:

Its funny because that wasnt the real story the one with his wife is its himted throughout the story with madness is like gravity all it takes is a little push that references his wife when he pushed her out the window and why when he was about to attack the guy who reminded him of his father the beautiful girl was made a priority because it reminded him of his wife the deepest source of his trauma

      • Anonymous Says:

Also to add onto my previous comment the first one is true but the scares he got from his father are emotional in turn and one and most likely the most predomimant cause of his weak state of mind that was later pushed over the edge (literally) after he killed his wife

      • Anonymous Says:

One more add on to my comment the father with the knife could have caused the joker to use knives and thats why when he describes that emotion comes from killing with a knife that could be because of the emotional trauma hes suffered from the his father with the knive

In his next to last film performance, Ledger played the Joker in The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan, first released, in Australia, on 16 July 2008, nearly six months after his death. While working on the film in London, Ledger told Sarah Lyall, in their New York Times interview, that he viewed The Dark Knight’s Joker as a “psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy.”[31]
To prepare for the role, Ledger told Empire,
“I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices – it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh. I ended up landing more in the realm of a psychopath – someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts”; after reiterating his view of the character as “just an absolute sociopath, a cold-blooded, mass-murdering clown”, he added that Nolan had given him “free rein” to create the role, which he found “fun, because there are no real boundaries to what the Joker would say or do. Nothing intimidates him, and everything is a big joke.”[32]
For his work in The Dark Knight, Ledger won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, his family accepting it on his behalf, as well as numerous other posthumous awards including the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, which Christopher Nolan accepted for him.[33][34]
At the time of his death, on 22 January 2008, Ledger had completed about half of the work for his final film performance as Tony in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.[35][36] Gilliam chose to adapt the film after his death by having fellow actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell play “fantasy transformations” of his character, so that Ledger’s final performance could be seen in theatres.

  42. One nerd’s guide to better understanding Batman and Joker:

No two characters in comic books complement one another quite like the Batman and Joker. At first, you assume they’re on separate ends of the morality spectrum. Then you realize these two dudes are two very dependent versions of the same person. Sounds counter-intuitive, but hear me out.

Batman has one core tenet: Do not kill. Under no circumstance will he ever justify killing another being, even if his decision is irrational as fuck. Imagine how hard this is. The most logical man on the face of the planet, the greatest single detective, has to fight the reasoning and critical thinking he relies on. He knows killing a major villain would prevent a shitload of deaths. He knows it would bring a greater peace to Gotham for the time being. He knows the good it would do. He struggles with it. But he never acts on it. He brings every villain back to Arkham and goes back to his Bat-cave to plan for their possible escape. That’s what he does. He plans.

This is a man surrounded by beings that can fly, run faster than light, use magical rings, and do other crazy shit. All he has is his brain. His powers are strategy, foresight, unshakable will, and a disturbing level of obsession. He has a contingency plan for diffusing almost any possible scenario. He has to. He’s so good at it that even Superman wouldn’t fuck with him. And that guy can sit inside the fuckin’ Sun. (And consider this… Who is Supe’s arch nemesis? Lex fucking Luthor. A man who only has brains, money, technology and no superpowers).

Now The Joker. This guy is evil incarnate. Not just any evil. The kind of evil that has no purpose or goal. He wants to cause as much chaos as possible with as little remorse as possible. Sociopath doesn’t even scratch the surface. Why does he call himself The Joker? Jokes imply lighthearted comedy and humor. You think of smiles and laughter. You think of joy. This shit is the exact opposite of what he does to people. He’s basically a walking, “Ha-ha fuck you.” The comedy and humor is still there. The smiles and laughs too. Even joy. But they are there for him and only him.

Then one day, The Joker meets The Batman, and his life suddenly has purpose. For the first time, his actions become planned and orchestrated. His chaos becomes more ordered and methodical. Why? Because he knows Batman is smart. But he also knows Batman is fighting some heavy demons. He understands Batman better than anyone. Why? Because behind that black mask and armor, he sees a sleeping Joker fighting to wake up. And he’ll go to any length to unleash him. How? By getting Batman to kill. But just any random murder isn’t enough. He wants to be the victim. He wants to be the first person Batman kills.

But why is it so bad if Batman kills Joker? Wouldn’t it save countless lives in the long run? Isn’t Joker just gonna eventually escape Arkham and kill again? He’s done it more than a few times. Why doesn’t Batman just bend the rules this one time and rid the world of this evil fuck? People ask these questions, acting like Batman hasn’t asked himself the same shit hundreds, maybe thousands, of times. And guess what? Batman is smarter than you.

After his parents’ murders, Bruce Wayne dove headfirst into a dark, dark place in his mind. His entire reality pulled a 180 in the time it took two bullets to travel 10 feet. Over time, he willed himself out of this mental void by dedicating his existence to stopping the evil that stole the life he was supposed to have. And to stay on track, he set some ground rules. The most important? THOU SHALT NOT KILL.
Under that calm and cool demeanor, Bruce Wayne is teetering on the edge of sanity. He spends endless night obsessing over his duties, using The Batman to cling to the last shred of the real him. This is why he can never kill. He can’t allow himself that privilege and that power. He knows that after that first kill, the second will be that much easier to justify. Then a third. Then inevitably a fourth. And suddenly he becomes judge, jury and executioner. No man should have that power… especially no Batman. Bruce knows that this shit would inevitably push his psyche past the brink and back into the darkness. And the last thing anyone wants is an unrestrained, mentally unstable Batman. Good fucking luck trying to stop that guy.

Joker knows all of this. He knew it the first time he looked past Batman’s mask, and into Bruce Wayne’s eyes. He recognized the anger and frustration fighting to explode. And another thing, who the fuck does this bat guy think he is? He thinks he’s better than me? Mr. High and Mighty thinks he’s better than the silly impulsive Joker? WHO THE FUCK DOES THAT BAT GUY THINK HE IS?

I guess I’ll have to show him. And that’s the beginning of the most beautifully complicated relationship in comic book history. A chess game where both players know that inevitably only one will walk away. Batman will do everything in his power to prolong their match, while Joker obsessively commits his existence to ending it. Joker wants to die. He wants to push Batman far enough to break that mental dam holding back all the rage. He wants to show Batman that Bruce Wayne is no different than the scarred up maniac he fights against. He wants to win and he knows he can’t be alive to do that. His death will unleash a force more chaotic than he can ever hope to be. This will be Joker’s last gift to the world, and he’ll be laughing his ass off every second along the way.

    Also, Robin sucks balls.
